    3031 is a good choice for a 30-30 powder.

I also like 3031 in the .30-30. I am not up on bolt-action loads, as all I have are levers.

Modern Reloading #2 has max OAL for .30-30 at 2.550 in. Many loads listed for the 150 jacketed bullets range from 2.225 in to 2.550. It doesn't say JSP or (more likely) JFP bullets, though.

Lymans 47th handbook also shows 2.550 max oal for levers. In the back are loads for T/C Contenders. It shows 2.745 as oal with the 150 spire point in that single shot.

Max listed for the Contender with 3031 is 28.5 gr for 1847 fps (16" Contender bbl).

To get a good OAL for your specific gun, you could up some non-powdered rounds ranging from 2.550 up to 2.750 and see what functions through your magazine and will chamber, etc. Since every gun is a bit different, this could make yours work great, and be more accurate, than a generic guess from a manual. Good luck!

I have four bolt-action rifles in .30-30; a Winchester 54, a Remington 788, a Savage model 40, and a Savage model 45. In my rifles, the traditional flat point bullets deliver better accuracy (smaller groups) than pointed bullets. Also, in order to fit the magazines of some rifles, the bullet must be seated so the case mouth is past the ogive of pointed bullets. And I use H4895 a little more often than IMR3031 in my .30-30's. I haven't tried the leverloution bullets yet. Of course, your rifle may shoot better than mine with pointed bullets.

COL is ALWAYS dependent on the chamber dimensions and "what the barrel likes."
Usually, one starts about 0.020" off the lede/lands/rifling and adjusts shorter and longer to find what works best--generally after you have nailed down a bullet and powder the rifle likes.
For a bolt, you are of course free to use spitzer bullets.
I find that 170-175gn bullets are generally the most accurate.

We use 3031 and 2400 for 30-30 with 158gr flat point gas-checked the 30-31 has a slight edge for tightest groups @ 100-200 yards.

I like the 170 grain Hornady over 30 grains of IMR-3031 in my Marlin 336RC. Tight groups @ 100 yards with the Micro-groove bbl.
I've also loaded 150 grain Spitzers for a "two shot tube feeder" One round in tubular magazine & one in chamber. Taper crimp spitzer to be O.A.L. for the .30-30 Got this from 1989 Gun Digest. Long before "Leverevolution"....
