I used a 44mag when I lived in Florida. Sometimes a pistol or my Marlin 1894.

44 mag in a Ruger 7.5" Super BlackHawk works great,
my 444 marlin stops them DRT.

I dare say a .450-.400 Nitro Express would suit.

I was watching a guy sighting in his 45-70 with hanloads he had made up. Definately dead pigs at 100. Quite humane but quite loud as well.
Lever gun held a few quick rounds as well.

.44 mag works well. In the early 80's I had a super Blackhawk 11.5" SA
with a 4X scope. on a rest at 100 yrds. DRT! never tried to take anything over 120 lbs.

Marlin lever guns in .45/70 or .35 Rem work for me.

Are you loading for it? Are you going to use cast bullets? Is it in a handgun, rifle or both?

I have 44 mag in both handgun and rifle. I have seen nice elk taken by both. I have a rifle in 45-70, have had it in handgun also. 444 are rare around here. Since you reload my choice is 45-70, you can download to 44 if you want. In a good rifle you can load just short of a 458. Cast bullets work well, maybe not in micro-grove bbl's.

I use a Marlin lever in .357 mag, loaded with 158 gr cast bullets traveling at about 1775 FPS. However, if you're going to be shooting a 400 lb pig I'd go for a .45-70 with a 405 gr cast.
On an animal that size you're going to need pentration and nothing digs like a cast bullet, in my opinion. What ranges are you looking at?

Keeping in my comfort zone on these at under 100yds. I recently shot a 122kg boar with a 6.5 139gr swede at under just 100yds, square on in the lug hole. After dropping rolling etc, the boar lifted it head, shook & wandered off dazed behind a bush . These beggers need 180gr 308 ..

Sound as if there are a lot of good choices for hog medicine. [^]

    Here's a couple recent hunts, both with 308 180gr s/p. Just the job [^]
