+1 It looks like a pretty darn good example of fiddleback claro walnut to me. Sure is a vast improvement over the factory Ruger mini stocks. Bob

That was going to be my first guess forge but I looked closer and it appears to be more of an open pore wood like walnut. Whatever it is, it sure is purty. Bob

I'm gonna' second that. A lot more elegant than the stick of firewood I used on my polished turd.

Thanks all. Did a search for fiddleback claro walnut and it looks right.

Is fiddleback claro walnut tough to work with? I'm used to seeing a grain and cutting away from. The minor work I did was pretty tough to read grain. Rather than clean cut the wood wanted to have little divots in the cut.

It can be prone to tear out if you guess wrong on the grain direction. Add in slightly different hardness over the surface because of the figure of the wood and working on a rounded slanted surface like a stock and it can be frustrating. Sharp tools and gradual cuts are your friends. When possible sandpaper should be used with a pad or block to spread out the force on the wood evenly. Bob

Darn shame to waste a good piece of timber like that on a boat anchor🙃
