I see in today’s ADN, there is an article on a rare red Aurora, you ever see one up there?
I actually saw a red one from the lower 48.
We were out spot lighting coyotes (it was still legal in Wyoming back then) out in the lower Red Desert between Baggs and Powder Wash, just north of the Colorado line.
We popped up out of deep draw and over a rim and the sky was ablaze.
The guy with me commented “ what the hell, did they bomb Montana”, we watched in awe for maybe 20 minutes and went back to coyote hunting, next time we popped up out of a draw, they were gone.
I never realized until reading that article, how rare they are and feel privileged to have gotten to see one, even if I didn’t understand the rarity until this morning.

Shortly after we moved here I was coming back to the house from the barn, and something caught my eye to the north. I looked and it was an aurora. It had some red in it among a lot of other shades. I told my wife, and we got lawn chairs and sat out in the driveway and watched it until it faded away. That was the only time I've ever seen one. It was kind of faint, but way cool anyway.

They are amazing each and every time you see one, because they are all different.

We often see red fringes at the bottom of the “curtains” but purely red ones are rare as hen’s teeth. I saw them once back in the 80s, as red as watermelon across the whole sky. It leaves you pretty speechless.
Even a display as hot as this one was, there’s barely any red (it looks grey/purple on iPhone photos).
