Truck driver shortage questions??
I was reading about the shortage of truck drivers as being part of the supply chain problems and mentioned this to my wife. She asked me why there is suddenly a shortage of drivers but there didn't seem to be this problem several months ago.
So where did all the truck drivers go?? Is this another artificial problem??

I read an article today about the boats at sea waiting to dock. It seems the union representing longshoreman in California is in Bidens pocket. They refuse to schedule work 24/7 and are using manual equipment to unload the shipping containers while other countries are operating automated equipment.
The article claims the average annual salary for a unionized long shoreman in California is $171,000. Californias governor will not allow anyone but union to have these jobs. The truck drivers must be Union and the trucks they are driving can't be more than a few years old.
No end in sight................

Californian officials are blaming labor shortages and trucking shortages.
Hereās some facts from the trucking industry.
The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.
Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.
Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union).
California has now banned Owner Operators.
Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035.
The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist.
CARB to begin blocking certain trucksā DMV registrations in 2020
Carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 model, or using engines manufactured before 2010, will need to meet the Boardās new Truck and Bus Regulation beginning in 2020 or their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the stateās DMV, the state has said.
The new āhealth-based requirementsā will need to be met before a driver is allowed to register his or her truck through the Department of Motor Vehicles, CARB says. A new enforcement tool used by the DMV beginning in 2020 will automatically block 2010 and older trucks from registration.
Then thereās the $5+ a gallon diesel prices in California. We simply arenāt going there and paying those prices.

i think there's a lot more here than meets the eye. all that has to b done is to sail these ships thru the canal and off load in one of the many Gulf of Mexico ports. i know the port of New Orleans has been actively seeking the business. surely this solution is economically better than having ships idling at anchor for weeks. like i said there is more going on here.

Yep I held a CDL for for close to 40 years it got to the point where it just wasn't worth the hassle to keep it anymore

A family member works for one of the largest trucking companies in the country.....Not only is there a shortage, but many of the new butts filling the seats are NOT the cream of the crop.....

Here is what is going on in this neck of the woods.
Folks can' pass a drug test.
Drivers reaching retirement age and can't stand the hassle and headache.
Takes a special will and effort to hang with the ever growing traffic and regulations.
Good friend ran a grading company, RIP now, always asked me to be on the look out for a half rotten buckeye stump.
Why? He said he wanted to put them in the driver seat as they would most like turn out better than most applicants.

I believe the deregulation of the trucking industry many years ago have now forced drivers to drive longer hours and get paid less.

I was n I-81 last week at 5:30 am. The only shortage was for parking spots for semis. Every on ramp, off ramp, and rest area was full of trucks.
Not to mention the ones still on the road.

Be a year tomorrow the last I heard anything from him, completely ghosted me with no reason, and left me with a load of problems. Hand healed up, then had a heart attack, recovered, and back to work, I got that from Bryann, and that was the last I heard from her too.

Joe, after his heart attack, I didn't know if he was alive or dead for almost a month! I finally left Bryann a phone message, that if I didn't hear from her in 24hrs, the Sheriff would be there for a welfare check. That's when she called and said he was back to work, and she would have him call me. Never another word.
