Took 4 shots
Got to meet a neighbor today. I was out on the mower dragging around the Cyclone Rake and a SUV pulled down the driveway. After turning off the equipment and taking off my earmuffs we introduced ourselves. Obviously I am not good at being neighborly because she has lived 400 yards away and we had never met before. She wanted to ask permission to look for a spike buck that someone hit in the road late last night. Her daughter had seen it in the middle of the road when she was coming home from work and took a picture with her phone. When they went to get it 15 min later it was gone and they thought it probably dragged itself into the woods between our pond and the road. She thought it was somewhere between our drive and their place.
Well after combing that narrow strip, to no avail, I decided to check the other side of the drive and we found it out in our harvested wheat field. Poor thing was still alive with a busted back end. I was going to put it out of its misery but she was already calling law enforcement to report it. I had to argue once before with the law about putting down a deer and wasn't going to do it again so against my wishes the poor thing suffered another 20 minutes until they showed up to put it down. Took him 4 shots with his service weapon. I had gone back to riding the mower and didn't even know he had come or hear the shots. Judy motioned me from the end of the drive and I went to see what was going on. He seemed awfully proud that he had killed it and I thanked him and said I would take care of the deer. After he left Judy told me about the 4 shots and just shook her head. A 9 doesn't kill quick if you shoot the deer muzzle, low in the neck, point of the shoulder and finally the chest.
It's now lying up by the road and if no one picks it up today, I'll put it somewhere for the coyotes and other critters to feast on. Such a waste but after spending 12+ hours hurt that bad the little bit of salvageable meat probably wouldn't taste very good.
The next time this happens I will just shoot, shovel and shut up instead of waiting for someone to fill it full of holes. A 22lr in the ear would have sufficed and been more humane. Sorry for the long story but I needed to vent.
1. Someone hit it and didn't stop
2. Neighbor knew about it but did nothing for 12 hours
3. Officer increased the suffering before getting in a lucky 4th shot

Yup, one pissed me off 2 years ago. Someone had hit a doe in front of the house, saw the lights flashing from the sheriff lady, she was calling for a tow truck. I asked where the deer was she said over there. I walked over and she was still alive, so I said shouldn’t we take care of her first since no one is hurt?
She said no, so I told her I’d take care of it myself and did. What could she say, my farm.
Tasted terrible, was alive too long with her adrenaline pumping trying to get up with a broken back. Bad sign, she suffered too long.

Yeah I imagine it wasn't very tasty. 20 or so years ago the week before Christmas I came home from work and found a doe with a busted hip lying against the back of the garage. No idea how long it was there and after the conservation officer dispatched it and then wouldn't take it he wrote me a permit to possess it. Cut it up and froze the meat. First package we cooked was so bad we unwrapped everything and gave the coyote and fox population a treat for Christmas. Bob

9mm is quite adequate if placed PROPERLY. I've used a 9mm several times to put down vehicle struck deer. Don't try to head shoot them, just aim where you would while hunting and a HP 9mm will finish them w/o much more misery.
Additionally, I wouldn't even consider butchering a road kill that laid around injured for any length of time. They taste terrible.

I agree with you a 9mm is not good to use to head shoot a deer. When I was running a tow truck had watched a police officer shot a doe in the head. Could see the rounds flow right around the skull under the skin. Finally I put a 22lr in the ear. End of doe.
