Wildlife experts! I don't get it. Why did they cut his antlers off to get the tire off. Why not just use a saws all and cut a section out of the tire or cut it in half. There are blades that will go thru that tire and steel bands like hot butter.
Kind of like pulling Martha's claws out and leaving her defenseless. Maybe to remote or they were in a hurry. Go figure.------Ray

I wondered the same, but by cutting his antlers off, for whatever reason, they may have spared, (pun intended) him to survive this hunting season.

"Wildlife experts" are not necessarily mechanically inclined nor is there a specific requirement for common sense.

They addressed that in the article. They couldn't cut the metal bands in the tire. I assume they didn't have the right tools with them though they may have thought they did. Limited time with limited tools and they did the best they could. Good work just to get him darted.

Question: The tire was on the elk for 2 years & it was removed by cutting off the antlers, so it would slip over the animals head. Don't elk shed their antlers yearly? And if so, why couldn't the tire have fallen off then?

They've been trying to catch up with this elk for some time. They had to get it when they could. Who knows what tools didn't get grabbed or were in another truck or what ever. Geez, some of you folks would worry the azz off a wooden Indian.

Why wouldn't they cut the tire instead of the antlers?

“It was not easy for sure. We had to move it just right to get it off because we weren’t able to cut the steel in the bead of the tire,” Murdoch said in the news release. “We would have preferred to cut the tire and leave the antlers for his rutting activity, but the situation was dynamic and we had to just get the tire off in any way possible.”

“Tranquilizer equipment is a relatively short-range tool and given the number of other elk moving together along with other environmental factors, you really need to have things go in your favor to have a shot or opportunity pan out,” said Swanson in the news release."

I'm curious. I got to thinking about this and remembered I have tried it but it's been quite awhile. How many here have actually tried to cut through a tire bead with a sawzall? If you can stabilize the bead so it doesn't dance with the blade you can do it if you have enough blade and want to take the time. It's not a simple cut and go. A circular saw works better, much better but it's a mess and even with a carbide or diamond blade you aren't doing many.
Old nylon tires you could cut the bead with about anything. Steel corded ones are another issue.

I have cut thru tires with regular hack saw many times. It is all in the type of blade. One cut, One guy grabs end of tire and another grabs other end and twist hard and off comes tire. No bouncing with regular hacksaw and no bouncing with saws all if blade guard butted against tire tight.---------------------------Ray

I bet I could have cut that tire off faster with a hacksaw, than the time it took to cut off both antlers.

What blades are you fellows using I need to get some.

we have used just a 4 1/2 grinder with a cut off blade to cut thru tires and the beads
but then again time and tools and I was not there at least they got the tire off the fellow
will this start a trend to cut the rappers and Mr. T's off also
