Gigging trip

Our gigging trip was a success. Got on the river and up we went to a point just below what we call snaggy bend. It is exactly that. Root wads and dead trees everywhere which are hairy to navigate in daylight, even worse in the dark.

We pulled up to a gravel bar to chill until it got dark. Fired up the generator and turned on the gigging lights. One was not functioning so Brother, being ever so resourceful, had spare bulbs under the boat seat. Got that fixed and we waited for darkness.

We had a light breeze and temps in the 70's. The river is still low and a tad murky. We didn't let that stop us from having a great time.

    Not bein a marine biologist, I gotta ask, what are they?? The only fish we have here that look anything like that, are perch. Never get that big though.

    Carp and a few hog nose suckers in the tub. Drum were already fileted when I took the pic. We also got one gar and a few buffalo. The gar was small and became cat food. Buffalo was also fileted and is awaiting a corn meal dredge

    I've waded creeks and gigged. Frog and fish. In the spring, when the dogwoods bloom, suckers are on the riffle. If you find them you can fill a sack up.

    We used to gig for frogs but finally got tired of the gators, moccasins and mosquitos.

    Seafood store has danger free frogs ......... my favorite.

    Still gig for flounder however.

    Do you eat those fishes?

    Folks around here many years ago would go to the river when the Red Horse were running in the spring.

    They would bring sacks full of their catch home and can them for eating year round.

    Don't know how they "caught " them but I would wager gigging or grabbing was the trick.

    Close friend of mine's father was a a ranger at a Scout camp with a few ponds on the property. We use to get into the water at this one pond and shine frogs. They never tried jumping away and the catches got to the point where we used to pick out the larger ones and release the others.
