Another wreck Similar to Forgemonkeys post.
My eldest sons FIL got in a mule wreck in the back country a few days ago.
He got a helicopter ride into Cody Wyoming hospital thanks to a couple hunters who happened upon them and happened to have a Garmin InReach system.
He ended up having nine broken ribs and bruised kidney.
Another in the party was headed out to an area with phone service, so he would have gotten the helicopter ride either way, albeit just a little longer timeframe.
He was the third person I know of that the InReach system proved its worth for. It’s fast becoming a staple for back country enthusiasts. Far better than the SPOT system that I had in the past, a little more expensive but more communication options.

If I was to go back to Africa and work I would get the Garmin InReach system. I have an older Iridum phone(I am not subscribed any more) sitting in a drawer. Its is old and out of date(its from the early 2000's) but I guess it will still work.
Its nice to have good commo especially if you are alone and in the sticks.

Its nice to have good commo especially if you are alone and in the sticks.
I was never fortunate enough to have an Iridium, I had to use Inmarsat system or Thuraya.

Might I ask the reasoning behind euthanizing the cubs? Just curious.

I read that article earlier and assume the cubs were well grown. IIRC cubs stick with momma for a couple of years. The cubs may have participated or at the least were being taught it was okay to be aggressive toward humans.

Yep, she in local hospital. No updates on her or her dog’s condition as of yet.
This is not an uncommon occurrence, happens yearly it seems. Either someone trying to save a pet or thinking they can get off a boardwalk to get a little closer for a better picture.
just a couple years ago a young fellow jumped in one to end his life, his family was pretty upset that NPS couldn’t recover his carcass, but the geothermal spring was so hot and possibly acidic that not long after he entered, there wasn’t anything to attempt recovery of.
The geyser basin has walkways for a reason, you can’t tell what’s stable and able to support a person. Dangerous for sure.

My grandmother did that too. She should have known better, she was the first permanent woman Ranger in America. One day she had a group of tourists out on a tour. She stepped out onto the surface crust and broke through, and went in up to her knee. Luckily she had knee high boots on, but it still burned her over the top. She picked up the nickname "Paint Pot Peg" from doing that.

Awesome article. She had such an adventuresome spirit. Her cross country motorcycle ride must have been a joy and frightful at the same time.

You bet, Susie. Even bigger than that trip was her being the first woman to XC ski the 143 mile loop through the Park, it was the mail delivery route my granddad used, and she decided if he can do it, so can she. She was right!
