Last of the oil burning carriers.I got to walk up beside her when she was docked in Norfolk years ago and marvel at the size of a carrier.

Right buddyb. I was stationed at Ft. Monroe, just down the road back in the '60's. The first time I saw a large navy ship, I couldn't believe how big it was. I thoughts were what keeps this thing from just rolling over. It was hard to imagine how much was below the waterline to keep that from happening.

Last of the big oil-burning carriers. But why is it necessary to scrap the whole thing? Can't the oil-based propulsion system be removed and a nuclear-based system installed? If the Navy was a private enterprise, I bet that is what would be done. But, private enterprise doesn't have unlimited funds like the US government does.

Carriers get old. The Enterprise and Nimitz have both been decommissioned. While replacing the boilers was no doubt possible, the retrofit would probable cost 1/2 - 3/4 the price of a new one, and you have a 65 year old piece of steel that will never come close to the capabilities of a Ford Class ship

Not quite the same thing, but when i was driving the big rig I pulled into the park in Mobile and took a tour of the battleship Alabama which is on display there.

Unbelievable, the size of these old warships, the number of men who served on them and the immense number of guns they carry.

On another site, a poster wondered if some Cessna plot would attempt a touch and go on it as it is being towed.

They probably have prevented such foolishness by placing I-beams or other items on the deck. And if somebody did, the FAA would want to have a very harsh talk with him. As in, "Your license is revoked."

Here's some pics of USS Alabama Museum in Mobile. A tour is highly recommended. After all you can't tour USS Kennedy.
