I figured I should own up to it...last friday I saw and shot the biggest deer of my life. He was a huge 8 point, his g2s were around 10 inches. I tracked him 350 yards, ran into another hunter, tracked him another 1.5 MILES, never lost blood till the end and had to give up...due to the fact of federal property and the threat of being shot at. I could cry still today, the hunter said I hit him forward in the shoulder at the base of the neck[:(]. I was in a climber and had to lean out of my tree quite a ways and I think i just rushed the shot....lesson learned for the rest of my life. I haven't lost a buck in 3 years[:(]. Hopefully a gun hunter will put him down....He had me shaking out of my tree, I rattled him in at 3 pm. hours before dark...best experience ever!

That sucks man. Hopefully he will make it thru gun season and you will get another chance at him. Keep your head up. It happens to the best of us.

In all honesty I tried to take my time, I thought about shot placement but something went wrong. It still makes me sick to my stomache right now thinking about it...not only is he possibly fataly wounded but he also was a nice deer and it's a shame [:(].

AGun, Sorry to hear about the lost buck. However, like the Chief said, it has happened or will eventually happen to anyone that hunts. I lost a massive buck several years ago with a RIFLE!! It was an easy shot (200 yds broadside) for the caliber(.280) He may have been a state record. I was sick for days. I heard a shot on the adjoining property while tracking him and I hope someone else got him and he did not go wasted.

It kind of makes you really concentrate on future shots and you become a better hunter because of it IMO.

    Regards, Don

I lost one with a shotgun last year, 55 yrds. not sure how we lost him. the guy that taught me about hunting helped me track and he said he thinks someone took it, not that age matters but he's almost 50 and been hunting since he was 12. The blood trail was massive it went up under a downed tree and that was it. It was a darn good hit too I could see the body "ripple" for lack of a better term when I made the shot, where the slug hit. its no good but it does happen.
