Because I'm too cheap to buy a downrigger

    Simple cheap solution to drifting to fast. Get a 5gal bucket put a bunch of 1" holes in the bottom cut two holes opposite each other 2" from top run a good sturdy rope throgh them and hang off back of boat. I used to fish eastwern end of lake Erie from Sturgeon Pt to Hamburg.

    As far as a release goes a rubber band will work. You just have to replace it every strike. Otherwise Blacks releases are good, Offshore are good. There are also some cheaper ones out there, but I would stick to the above mentioned or get the rubber bands.
