97 winchester won't lock up

I have a 16 ga. Model 97 that when you slide the slide forward to shut and lock the action the slide goes forward but the bolt does not close all the way. It feels as if the slide disconects. I can shove the bolt forward and it appears to lock shut and I can cock the hammer and it seams to function as it should. I have replaced the carrier and it's still doing the same thing.Any suggestions?

  post this question on the ask the experts, this is the black powder board. though many here can answer burt over on the experts board can give you a good answer.
