information wanted on cap and ball pistols
I have a pair consecutive numbered single shot cap and ball pistols. Damascus barrels that are 5 1/8 inches long, octagon shape, 3/4 inch outside 35 cal. bore. pistols numbered 109 and 110 and are imprinted flobert a paris on top of barrel. left sided of barrel has HD with an asterisk above it, then what appears to be a shield that when turned upside down it appears to be what looks like a horse or lion on his hind legs next to the shield and in the shield looks like a f on top and s t e underneath. this is our best view with a magnifier. underneath the barrel close to the trigger guard is a 12 on both. On the breach is a crown with a D underneath. Scrollwork on frame and trigger guard and back strap. wood handles of unknown origin with nickel(?) shield embedded in middle back of handle. ball chamber at butt with scrollwork.

thanks for the help contender man, I am still in computer kindergarten. I have found out that Flobert was credited with inventing the rim fire cartrige in about 1835. I also believe the mark "HD with an * above" signifies the gunsmith that made them. the small plate that holds the cap as seen in the middle picture is a mystery to me. it fits in the slot in the breech of the barrel, the hole in the barrel is only large enough to accept the threaded shank on the nipple. could this be a transition to breech loading? can anyone add anything? please!
thankie Jim

The sield: f= France. ste= Saint Etienne. Made in France, proofed at Sain Etienne. Flobert (Luis Nicolas Auguste) constructed 1847 his rimfire cartridge. It was patented 1849 pat 8616. He opened a bussines in 1855 at boulevars St Michel where he made elaboret guns. Moved 1865 to Blvd Sebastopol. Had cheaper guns manufactured in Liege. A try to introduce his breech system to military guns failed. He died in 1894. The crowned letters suggest to me a Belgian manufacture. I have seen very similiar guns proofed in Belgium. The butt chamber usually holds percussion caps. Lars. 0
