.22 VS. .25
I CARRY A BERETTA 21A IN .22 FOR GENERAL UTILITY AND CONCEALED CARRY. I HAVE HEARD THE .22 IS BETTER FOR PENETRATION THAN THE .25, BUT I HAVE JUST PURCHASED A 21A IN .25. ANY THOUGHTS ON THESE 2 CALIBERS?

It's not really worth worrying about the difference; a gun in either .22LR or .25 is not really adequate for self-defense, but in life-threatening situations they are far better than being unarmed. The .25 has an edge in reliability, as it is a rimless case. However, the .22 LR has higher velocity & may penetrate better. While both will terminate most attacks, & may eventually kill your attacker, neither will knock him down.
As with any auto, you should fire at least 100-200 rounds with malfunction before staking your life on a particular load. THAT is the most important thing that you can do.

Agree with above post. My friend has a stainless .22 model and it is particular with ammo. I picked up a .25 cal and like it a lot. The only thing I have noticed is that mine with jam if I rack the slide for the first round. If I pop the top and load that way, then no problems. My buddy's .22 would jam once or twice every other mag or so. Not good if you have to defend yourself.
I use to own a .22 model in the Taurus version and it was a hunk of junk and was double action only.
I only carry my .25 if I am wearing shorts.

You have gotten good information here. Both are far better than nothing, and neither is really adequate for self defense. There are certainly differing opinions regarding just what is adequate, but .32 is probably rock bottom minimum, .380 is better and with .38 Special, you are getting into "tried and true" territory. In semi-auto, 9mm and up is the way to go. Bad news is, you are probably not adequately protected. Good news is, you get to buy another gun. 0 -

You NEVER load or unload that gun by retracting the slide,it'll jam every time.

Federal American Eagle .22 ammo has 140 lbs of energy while the .25acp has 65 lbs.
Which one do you want to carry? The .22 has almost three times more energy than the .25 acp. with a bullet that weighs 10 grains less.

The 140 ft. lb figure is from a 20" barrel-you loose an awful lot of energy when you ruduce that to 3" or so.
In equal-length barrels, the .22 L.R. is barely more powerful than the .25 ACP. This is offset by the quality of .25 ACP ammunition. .25's are going to give more reliable function, more consistent velocity and better bullet performance, as they are manufactured in the same fashion as other centerfire pistol rounds. Generally, .22 L.R. is produced in very high quantity with limited quality control. How many .22's have you extracted that failed to ignite, even though there was a significant dent on the rim? I stopped counting a long time ago. I have both .22 and .25 mouse guns and would far prefer the .25 for reliability. Speer now offers a high-velocity loading with a 35 grain gold dot. I have tsted this load and expansion in ballistic clay is .39"-better than any hollow point .22 I have tested, although .22 penetration was deeper.
All that said, if you want a mouse gun you would be a lot better off with a P3AT .380 than any .22, .25 or .32. .380 is about minimum for serious self defense.

Yeah, even though I hate the .25 and have read a lot about how the .22 is actually a superior round, I have to vote for the .25 in a semi-auto.
I don't think the .22 was even orginally designed to be a stacked magazine fed round.

Look at Handgun and Rifle Stopping Power. .22 LR has 40% one shot stops, .25 ACP -2 27% one shot stops.
However, the .25 semi-auto feeds and ejects more reliably than the .22 rimfire. I wouldn't trust a rimfire semi-auto to function every time. Buy Blazer ammo or other ammo of that ilk and you will be just as well armed.
