Smith & Wesson 38 lemon squeezer
I own a Smith & Wesson 38 - hammerless, break top Lemon squeezer and would like to find out the value. I believe it is a model 4 (pinned front site). Chrome plated with pearl handle and a 2 inch barrel. S/N 1747XX It is in very good to excellent condition. No pitting or other defects.

Flayderman's shows the fourth model excellent at $275. Pearl grips would add to that. Two inch barrel is not listed among the standard configurations. If it was cut from a longer length the value would be reduced considerably, likewise if the nickel is not original. OTOH if the 2" bbl was a factory special order, the value would be increased. Assuming original excellent as described up to $400 down to $150 with all the above negatives. Hope this helps. 0 -
I believe the 2 inch barrel is original. I found some pictures showing a standard 2 inch barrel on another site. Additionally the nickel is original. 0 -
If so, congratulations! 0 -
5th Model had a 2" barrel as a std. order. 4th Model (per my reference library) did not offer one. So if the barrel is original then you must have a special order.
In the condition you mention I would urge you to contact S&W and spend the $30 on a factory letter. If you do that and it "letters" to the barrel length and finish you have a fairly valuable piece with the factory letter to back it up. And if it is all original, I'd say that $800 to $1000+ would not be out of bounds on value. Maybe even more if there were only a small number of 2" custom barreled pieces made.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I will take your advice and get the letter of S&W. Thanks to all for your help 0 -
I have the same gun in the same config with pearl grips and it shoots like new. I have often wondered if this was the way it came. The serial # is not far off from yours 179***. Think I'll get the letter also even though I don't believe in them.
