Savage 99

Can you tell me what year Savage starting putting a serial number on the 99 lever gun? I have one that does not have a serial and do not know what model of the 99 it is. I can give some details. Chamber 300 Savage, 24" barrel, mag indicator, and an indicator when gun is cocked and chambered. Aside from that, I don't know what other info to include. Thanks.

I appreciate all the info. I have looked all over the receiver and everywhere else I could not find a serial...still have not found one. The sights have been removed and a scope mounted on it. I did take the scope and mount off to see if serial would be there...but the only thing stamped on top was SAVAGE 99...nothing else. It does have the lever lock for safety. Forearm is checkered with an upside down triangle...and the grip has checkering as well. I guess the Mag indicator is a counter for number of rounds in the magazine... I really don't know where else to look for a serial. Thanks again to all.

Okay, I just got an email back from Small Arms Shop and told them the same thing I have posted here...they told me that in 1947 some guns did leave without serial numbers because the machine that stamped the numbers were broke at that time and they were shipped out without serial on them. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks again.

    I was at a Pawn shop today and saw an older Savage 99. I am wondering what Model it is and how much it should be worth to buy. It was chambered in 300 savage with a 24" bbl. It had a saftety located by the lever and the rotary magazine down inside. Sparse chekering on the Stock, but it was cut and not impressed. NO cracks in the stock. No checkering on the Forend. It had a plastic looking cap on the pistol grip and a steel buttplate. It was listed for $359.00 I looked and looked but could find no model number. Does anybody have any idea what this model was? Where would the model number be? I should have written down the serial number . I can go back.

    THE LEVER STYLE SAFTY PUTS IT BACK TO THE 1950'5, THE BARREL SHOULD BE MARKED M-99, THE VARIATIONS WERE NOT MARKED ON THE RIFLE (99F, 99H, ECT.) THE STOCK/BARREL STYLE WILL DETERMIN THIS. $360 IS A GOOD PRICE IF ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD SHAPE.

    Would need serial number or a good bit more detail to sort out the model. As Mike Whiskey says the letter designations were used internally by Savage and never were on the guns. That said, check the bore and look for changes, like holes in receiver for scope mounting, not done at the factory and so on. If all that looks good and you are satisfied with the conditon, $360 is a real decent price. After you buy it, e-mail me and we will try to sort out the details.[^]

    Hey TAYLOR46 on the reciever ring where the barrel and reciever meet either on the very top or on the right side of gun will say model 99 or 99 f, 99r, 99g, ect ect ect. if it does not say anything its old enough for the serial # to tell you an age and then from there the style of the stock and butt plate will tell you which model you have the safty on the lever is not a indecator of age as stated above. there are two different types of tabs on the lever safty that I can recall. one is a 90 degree bend (very early) and the other is a rounded bend (early 40s to mid 60s). On some models the tang safty was changed in 1960 but some stayed the lever style thru 1984. if this gun is in any kind of condition and your thinking of buying dont wait its a very good price. here in midwest they bring 425.00 to 450.00 rough.
