I BOUGHT A PRE BAN COLT AR 15 SP1 IT HAS THE BAYONET LUG A FLASH SUPRESSOR BUT NO FORWARD ASSIST ITS IN PERFECT SHAPE ALL ORIGINAL PARTS EVEN THE PLASTIC MUZZLE CAP WHATS THIS WORTH?

Production of the AR-15 series of rifles for civilian sales were discontinued by a Colt internal policy decission back in 1989- a full 5 years before the Crime Bill. It would appear highly unlikely that commercial AR-15 rifles will ever be offed to the general public again by Colt; it will probably be "Sporters and Match Targets" for ever. As a result your rifle has collector interest, although unimformed sources may differ with that opinion, particularlly if you have to original box and paper work. Most dealers right now (apparently all of whom are fools) are paying $900 to $1,000 for rifles like yours. You can doubtless get more money by going the private sales route or on auction. Keep in mind that the very name Colt and AR-15 means that there will always be interest in your rifle.

After a full day of reading your posts I am convinced that you are indeed a paint by the numbers kind of guy. Yes a Rembrandt is just a painting...but he is not going to be around to paint any additional artworks. That is what makes something a collectable item. Whether or not this appeals to everyone is a matter of personal choice. I am a firearms dealer and collector. I checked your profile and found you have no credentials what so ever- your profile is a blank.

Snuff, I am one of those fools who will have egg on his face next year when the ban sunsets. I have been foolish enough to buy collector guns for decades. I hear there are some other fools out there as well. I now realize I have been a "greater fool" to buy and enjoy all those old guns I have. Thank you for waking me up.
Now what do I do with all these old guns that have no real worth beyond shooter value? I hope all the other "greater fools" have not wised up yet and will still be willing to pay me more than shooter value for all my old guns now that I have seen the light. How nice it must be to not have a single gun that is worth more than you paid for it. It must be comforting to know that if someone steals your gun, you can buy an exact replacement tomorrow.
I hope I can find a "greater fool" to pay me at least $550 for my low three-digit Colt AR-15 now that I find out that you can get a functionlly identical rifle for that price. Talk about greater fools, a guy offered me $500 for the rifle's owner's manual that is marked "Commanche" instead of "Sporter," and I did not take it! After all, it was just an owner's manual made of old paper. I could have just photo-copied it and I am sure he would have still paid $500 because it would be functionally identical.
With those fine Rock River rifles out there, if the word gets out, I will be in trouble on the value of my old Colt AR-15 rifles!

Just curious, did you buy your wife a diamond or cubic zircon or nothing when you married her? After all, it is just a ring, and who would know the difference? Really, who needs a ring anyway? Do you waste paint on your house? After all, it is just a house and will not "live" any differently whether painted or not. Do you wash your car? Do you fix body damage to your car? After all, it is just a car and will not drive or run any differently. Using the functionality test you suggest, I will save a lot of money from now on, hopefully enough to make up for all that "greater fool" value that will now be gone from my gun collection.0 -

The notion that prices on the older assault weapons will go down even if the AWB sunsets is not well thought out. Most all the older assault weapons will retain their value even it the ban sunsets (and to bet it will sunset might be rather foolish). Why will the old assault weapons retain their value?
Quite simply, just because people will believe they are better than any new assault weapons they might make following the sunset. And indeed, they just might be.
People have always had a tendency to think that older is better. Once was, Chicom AK47 rifles were really looked down on, considered cheap. Now days, many will tell you the Chinese AKs are amoung the best you can buy. And even if the ban sunsets, there won't be any new Chicom AK47s come in because of it.
So, have you noticed any difference between the older Springfield Armory M1A and the newer ones? Even if the ban sunsets, there will be plenty of people out there willing to pay for an M1A built from mainly USGI spec parts. The bas sunsetting isn't going to mean Springfield Armory is going to return to building better guns.
It's like the old pre-64 Winchester thing. They were built better in the old days, and people will buy the better older stuff. For any particular rifle, whether or not it's true that the older ones are better isn't going to matter. People (like me) are going to have a lot of money wrapped up in older pre-ban rifles. Even if it's a myth that the older rifles are better, it will be a myth that will propogate quite widely.
Look at how many assault weapons manufacturers went out of business! There won't be any pre-ban Calicos, Intratecs, or Colt AR15s for that matter. They just won't be built, ever again.
To bet the ban is going to sunset, that's quite a gamble, but one that doesn't cost much. That is, unless you do decide to buy three or four years from now. I'm betting it doesn't sunset. Even if it does, the kind of rifles I'm buying still won't be widely available after the ban.

hey judge! i'll give ya $550 for that colt! and being the fool i am, i can sell it to my grandfather(one of those fools) for 150, because it's only a shooter gun right? i'll use it to shoot up my rembrant. well...i hope everyone knows i'm kidding, but on a serious note, could you send me a pic, or post one? i'm stupid over great firearms. just wish i had the money to enjoy them on a more personal level. cody

What you'd BETTER do with the money is get a real fighting rifle, and skill with same. You collector types wont bust agrape when guns are outlawed. you will just meekly surrender your guns, and start collecting Barbie Dolls. So why dont you just go do so NOW, and quit wasting space on a GUN forum? 0 -

I have to a agree with boeboe if the ban sunsets the prices will not drop but go up because it will be supply and demand, because every body and there mother will be out to get one, I have already had people asking me to sell them my preban items if this comes about and saying they will pay top dollar for it just to have it.
I have a test rifle(M14) made in 1960 (select fire controls)and that shoots no different then the new ones,also I have preban AR15`s from colt and armalite, also again I have shot new ones and there realy isn`t any difference, so as far as older being better, I can`t see it, the only thing I can see is there a little more in $$ because it says PREBAN before the model name.

Strangely, many of my most cherished "collector items" are "real fighting rifles." Although I had been a shooter all my life, my Uncle Sam gave me some more training in firearms before he sent me to the war games in Southeast Asia. The nice thing about collecting guns is that they still work for their original intended purpose. A WWI M1 Garand will still deliver effective fire the same as it did 60 years ago. So will a three-digit AR-15 or M1A.
As an aside, I missed out on the Barbie thing. I did not realize how valuable they would become. My secretary has a first-year Barbie that has appeciated more than any gun I know.
Please explain to me how discussions of guns, be they collector class or new, does not belong on a gun forum. If one wants fantasy discussions of "real fighting" and "combat," there are other sites devoted to those topics. Guns and related topics are the focus here.
boeboe, I have made and agree with your analysis of the value of pre-ban guns if the ban sunsets. Were it not so, a Colt SAA from the 1800s would not be worth any more than a current, functionally-identical SAA. The first of anything is always worth more than a current functionally identical item. Since Colt altered the AR-15 well before the 1994 ban, it is highly unlikely that Colt will ever return the AR-15-type rifle to pre-ban form. (Although Colt should. Remember Coca-Cola realized its mistake and brought back Classic Coke.) That will keep the value of the early AR-15 rifles up.
I shall try hard not to feed the troll any more, but it is hard because I am naive enough to belive that reason will have an effect. Clearly I am wrong in this case.0
