MUZZLE CROWN
I'VE SEEN AND READ ALOT LATELY ABOUT CROWNING MUZZLES OF TARGET RIFLES TO 11?, BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING ON PISTOL BARRELS. I SEE BROWNELL'S HAS A PILOTED 45? CUTTER, AND CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT 45? IS CORRECT FOR A PISTOL BARREL(1911 STYLE). CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND SOME MORE INFO, IF 45? IS WHAT WORKS THE BEST, AND IF ANYBODY BESIDES BROWNELL'S HAS A PILOTED CUTTER AS I DON'T OWN A LATHE. THANKS BZ

Crowning will make a Shooter out of a non-shooter as well as make a non-shooter out of a good gun. Have it done by a professional.

Its true that a poorly crowned barrel or one needing to be crowned may not be a good shooter. The purpose of crowning is to send the bullet out into the world as clean, straight and undisturbed as possible. The end of the rifling wants to be free of burring, distortion, dings, etc. The circle described by the face of the rifling wants to be at right angle to the axis of the bore. Crowning properly does those things and one other, it is recessed a bit from the muzzle which protects the critical departure surfaces from being disturbed and possible damage. While there may be specific recommended degree angles of the crown to the bore, it is more important that the above mentioned conditions be met. If a barrel is being cut or the muzzle finished with the surface perpendicular to the bore axis, a very good crown can be done by carefully turning a marble or ball bearing with abrasive such as valve grinding compound. Size of the ball should be about 1 1/2 to twice bore diameter. Turn or twist back and forth by hand, keeping the ball in contact with the desired crown surface. Continue until you get a few thousandths 'crown' on both the lands and grooves all the way around. That won't give much recess protection but it will produce a good crown. Try it out for performance. If you did it carefully it should shoot very well. If you don't like it, you haven't damaged anything and can turn it over to a 'professional' as otherwise recommended. 0 -

ok what about all the old Winchester Rifles out there ? they have no crown at all and they shoot darn good 0 -

Yes I have seen a lot about crowning muzzles of rifles, pistols etc.
Some people want recessed crowns, 11 degree crowns and just about every other crown you can think of. The crowning of a barrel is done to provide a perfect exit hole for the bullet. A flat crown, 11 degree crown, recessed etc will all shoot true if the exit hole is cut exactly perpindicualr to the bore. The reason for recessing the
end of a rifle or pistol barrel, is to keep from having the rifleing damaged if you happen to bump the end of the barrel. To get tools
for cutting, go to Clymer Reamers or JGS Reamers. I don't have their links, but they both have websites. I also use their tools.
