270 wsm or 7mm wsm ???

I am going to buy one of these two rifles for my son. Does anyone have a preference between the two, and what are the pros & cons? I know I will be starting the Ford/Chevy debate??? hehe Thanks for any help.

    More bullet weights available in 7mm. 270 will probably launch it's loads just a tad bit faster in factory loadings.

    I have been leaning toward the 7mm but Bass Pro shops does not carry the 7mm. I didn't know if this was there preference or they know something I don't.

    the 270 will prolly have more factory loads- even after they sort out some early confusion w/ the 7(which is what i have). the 7 will scoot it out a bit faster, contrary to what senior glore sez, or so i read...which is better? if you reload maybe the 7- if not maybe the 270.... but have you given any thought to the 300(which will prolly be the most popular) or the new 1/4 bore wsm's?
    ps- at this point i'd be a bit dodgy of buyin the rsum chamberings unless you reload...i think remington just chambered a gun of theirs to 270wsm. only time will tell if they'll cave in on their rsum line of 7&300

    Hollywood, TLR, Aglore, Will chime in and add my 2 cents worth!!! As far as "the short mags" go, Remington tore themselves a new one by having the research done on their versions(SAUM) and going ahead and releasing the RUM's first(Big Behemoths that really are quite useless in my opinion!!!!) I think the SAUM design lends itself to being a more reloader friendly case than the WSM versions! What can either the 7mmSAUM,7mmWSM or the 300SAUM,300WSM do that we don't already have an arsenal of cases that can acheive the fps, energy, trajectory using the available bullets and powder? The .270WSM may be the best "improvement" on an already existing round of the bunch! Check out the numbers! And this is coming from someone who thinks that anything over .257 diameter is overkill for NA!!! Aglore is laughing as he reads this! Yes, I shoot a 7mmMAG and I own a 300SAUM that is ridicoulously accurate and fairly pleasant to shoot! However the .270WSM gets my nod if you've just got to play with one of the "Short Mag" cartridges!!! GHD
    PS: Aglore, let me know when I can expect the .204 Ruger to get here! You have the FFL on file! Just send it!![:D][:D]

    Charlie you got it. That puts 3 on my wish list for people. A 500 S&W for me, a Winchester Model 70 FWT LH in 300 WSM for a guy in Anchorage and a 204 Ruger for you.

    I've got one of those cheap Winchester 70 Super Shadows in a .270WSM from Walmart. It was about $400 with scope. I have to say that I'm actually really impressed with it. The Simmon's scope it came with sucks, and I really don't like the mounts, but the rifle shoots excellent. It will handle about 1" groups at 100yards with Winchester Supreme 130gr Ballistic Silver Tip. Thats pretty darn good for a $400 rifle. And I've been pretty impressed with the external ballistics of the .270wsm. Its faster than a .270wthby mag. Your kinda limited to bullets. So far the only manufacturer of ammo I've seen is winchester. 130, 140, and 150gr. But from anything from large varmints to medium/large game your pretty good. I would honestly feel comfortable shooting just about anything that walks on four legs in north america. I need to get setup for handloading. I think I could do alot with this cartridge.

    Allen, You ain't going to beleive this! I'm in PA for business meetings and when we finished today, I took a detour through town to go to a gunshop before meeting everyone for dinner!(Yea, you probably beleived that part! After all, my famous quote to the President of the company while here in the summertime when he asked where we wanted to go for dinner was, "Dinner hell!!!, I'm gonna kill something!!")
    ANyway, I think that there is a LEFT HANDED featherweight there! I will check again tomorrow! I do remember looking at it and thinking that it was definitely a "niche" gun!!!! I'll let you know!!! GHD

    Thanks Charlie. If it's not in 300 WSM it's worthless to this guy up here. Tell the store I'll give them dealer cost plus shipping if it is what I'm looking for. I know that Winchester has only shipped 278 in this configuration so far, so that's quite a find. Going to make the yearly migration to Anchorage for X-Mas shopping on Friday morning and then driving down to Homer on Monday to look at a boat that needs a new owner.[:)] If I buy I will be in the Halibut, Brown/Black Bear and Sitka Blacktail deer business next summer and fall on Prince William Sound.

    If you're going to shoot long distances, the 7mm is better. The 168 & 175 grain sierra bullets have the highest ballistic coeff. of any bullet, which equates to flatter shooting. Even If you are not shooting long, heavier bullets are avaiable in the 7mm - No brainer.

    I agree with groundhog devastation and would choose the 270wsm only because I already own a 300saum which the accuracy amazes me everytime I shoot it with factory loads!
