What calibers, what rifles?
My father recently passed away and left me an M1 and a Carbine. I have ammunition that is printed by the factory "30 caliber" on one box and he has handwritten "30.06" on another, and I have another box that says "ammo for the carbine" on it. What caliber ammunition goes to the carbine and M1. Are they interchangable? Is 30 caliber the same thing as 30.06? Will the Carbine fire the 30 caliber ammo?

Unless it's military ammo it should say on the bottom of the case what it is. .30M1 carbine is much smaller than the .30-06. 0 -
Welcome to GB They are two different rounds and can not be used in both rifles. The M1 uses the 30-06 ammunition. The M1 Carbine uses ammunition designed for it. The carbine ammunition is smaller and is more like pistal ammunition. The M1 also known as the M1 Garande uses the much larger 30-06 ammunition.

As stated above 2 different cartridges. quick way to tell them apart is that the M1 Garand (30-06) cartridge is the longest of the two, the bullet comes to a point, and the case is a bottle neck type. The M1 Carbine is not only the shortest but the case is straight sided and the bullet nose is rounded.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
It is all military ammo, father was a US Army marksman. The green ammo boxes just say 30 caliber on them, he hand wrote 30-06 on masking tape on one of the boxes. I am going to assume now that the boxes with 30 caliber on them are for the m1 and 30-06 is something he wrote because the 30 caliber ammo is 30-06. Is that right?

Caliber means nothing but the diameter of the bullet, both are 30cal BUT 2 completly different cartridges. The M1 Carbine rounds are about 2" long and the M1 Garand rounds are just over 3" long. In the civilian world the ammo that fit's the M1 Garand is called "30-06 Springfield".
Open a box and take a look at the ammo, you'll see the difference.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Thanks guys, these were 2 of my dad's most prized possesions and I want to be able to fire them in the future.

David, just a suggestion, call a local gun club or shooting range and see if someone there can give you instuctions/coaching on loading and shooting these guns. They are both great fun to shoot! 0 -
My father was also a marksman instructor, believe me (dad was in the army for over 30 years and he knew how to give an order, which I happily followed) as a boy I had plenty of instruction in the shooting of these firearms and lots of firing m14's and m16's. I pulled targets for him on many occasions and have picked up enough brass to fill several pickup trucks. Since he has now passed I want to pass down to my son a little of what he taught me. Sorry to ramble, but I am remembering a youth spend around a bunch of crusty army guys, didn't know the memory would be such a fond one. I was just confused on the 30 caliber issue since I haven't been to the range in awhile. Thanks!
