If kept in a cool dry place it will last as long in either way. If it is damp where you live, loading it will seal it airtight away from the air. So it depends.

While on this subject, does anyone know if using desiccant packs in the jugs of powder help keep them dry?

dessicant packs will also absorb the ether,..keep your powder jugs sealed with nothing inside them. Store them at normal house temp and you will get 50+yrs from the powder.

Thanks. I had a hunch it wasn't a good idea as I have never seen it addressed before.

I store the sealed jugs in ammo cans. Keeps them in the dark, dry, and mitigates temperature changes somewhat.
