Need a Trail Boss load for .30/30 (cast boolit)
I can't seem to find load data for the Lyman 170 gr RN cast boolit #311291 with the gas check.
Shooting a Winchester 94.
Any sources?
The Trail Boss data I have found does not address this boolit.
Thanks!

Why do people refer to bullets as boolits?!! 0 -
Ambrose:
It's cute.
There is a board called castboolits.com
Some people say it means hand cast bullets as opposed to machine cast, swaged, or jacketed.
Topkick:
I have heard that if you want to load something with Trail Boss that does not show up in Hodgdon/IMR literature, just call them up and they will help you.0 -
"just call them up and they will help you.'.........+1, THEY TOLD ME TO JUST LOAD FOR 100% OF CASE CAPACITY (POWDER TO THE BASE OF THE BULLET). ANY CAL./CARTRIDGE/BULLET (I WAS ASKING ABOUT A .50/90 SHARPS). 0 -
There's a good article on surplusrifle.com about this and they also mention the 30/30. They recommend 9 grains.
A case full won't cause issues but is a 'max' load- so far as you can go 'max' with this powder. I believe 75% of max is a start load. Hence the 9 grains.
Filling the case in my trapdoor would probably not be a good idea. So if in doubt, call them.
IMR also has some data on their website for this.
FWIW I love the cast boolit forum but hate the term 'boolit.' As (among other things) a language teacher and a grammar Nazi [}:)] it just rubs me the wrong way. But then again, some folks like carrots, I don't, so to each his own.0 -
As you've probably found, the Hodgdon/IMR data center lists a Trail Boss load for a 160-gr cast bullet. (6.5 to 9.0 grains). I would wager it would be perfectly fine with a 170-gr cast, but if you wish to be cautious, use 8.5 as your maximum charge.
Edit to add: I agree with jonk about the word in question. That cutesy use is affected and childish, the equivalent of an adult calling pasta "basketti."0 -
Thanks for the help. It affirms my "extrapolation". However, I hate to extrapolate loading data.
I use the term "boolits" to differentiate "cast yer own" vs the Hornaday V Max bullet, as many others do in the make your own world.
Just some different language, nothing intended to offend.0 -
I think that "cast bullet" differentiates quite nicely. Heaven forbid we should discuss swaged bullets; some might call them "swallets". Would a plated bullet be a "pullet?" 0
