SLIGHT BREEZE CAN DRIFT A BULLET THAT FAR, ALSO BULLET ROTATION WILL CAUSE SLIGHT DIFT

The scope can be mounted off center. So when the barrel point and scope point converge at 100 there is a gap at 200 and a bigger gap at 300. As you go farther out it takes less adjustment to cover the distance. So when you fire again you will see the smaller distance when the bullet strikes to the left. Make sense? With what you explained to me, does make sense.

First, if you have a weaver adjustable scope see if it can be adjusted at the bases to bring it over center of the barrel. If you have a Leupold/Redfield type base (dovetail front, windage rear) see if that might be your problem.

An anecdote of this is I knew a guy who had this done wrong by boresight at the store where he bought the rifle. At least you are on paper @ 100,200, and 300. He was so far off because the off center scope was set to converge at the end of the barrel with the boresight... Needless to say his first day on the range with it wasn't so good.

Sounds like your scope may be out of level. It takes very little "cant" or tilt to cause this amount of "drift." Imagine the vertical post on your scope continueing down toward the ground; if it does not align with the center of your bore, it will cause a left/right variance at all ranges short of and beyond your sight-in range.

I am no expert on this, but could this be a parallax issue?

Thanks guys. Now the scope issue. Is there a right or wrong way to center the scope in the rings? When I mount a scope on a rifle, I just eyeball it till it looks centered. I'd have to recheck all 6 30/06 rifles, but I believe they all do the same thing. (4 scopes are Simmons, one Leopould Vari XIII, and one new Weaver. The smaller calibers, 30/30s (3) don't seem to have this issue. I do my own reloading.

Could be canting errors ... checkout the article below.
