They are used with lead cast bullets...and usually only when you are expecting to exceed certain velocities.

ECC is correct they are used in higher velocity loads on lead cast bullets ...the gas check is a copper "cap" that is seated into the base of lead cast bullets...the purpose is to improve accuracy and prevent leading in high end loads...my 2 cents....reloader44mag.

One thing that has to be mentioned. A gas check is applied to a cast bullet that is designed to use one. You can not take a regular cast plain based bullet and apply a gas check. The bullets designed for a gas check has a reduced base diameter that is sized to accept the cup.

Thanks guys for your feedback and Thanks nononsense for doing a search on gas checks. I forgot about the search tool here. Nice reminder for me... Your comments and the comments from the earlier posts has provided me a very clear understanding of gas checks.. Thanks again.... Mark

Back in my younger days, I used gas checks on my hot handgun cartridges. But, nowadays I only use them on my rifle calibers. Guess I don't enjoy hard kicking handguns as much as I did when I was younger. Holy crap, am I becoming a old weenie? [:D]
