hodgdon 414 in 243
I loaded some loads for my handy rifle with 85gr Serria bullets and 414 powder to manual listed mid charge of 44gr. each charge was hand weighed, Case length was correct, full length resized, and WLR primers.
when I test fired these rounds the .243 sounded and kicked more like a 30-06 than a .243 and about the fifth shot a case separeted and the action opened, needles to say my shooting was over for the day. I then pulled the remainder of the loads, weighed the charges again and they all checked right on at 44gr. cases were all correct length.
I removed the stuck case from the chamber and fired some that I had loaded with Varget and everything was O K. What went wrong??? I've been reloading since 1970 and have never experienced anything like it!!!

According to my SIERRA manual your charge of 44gr is 2gr over max load.
W760 (exact same as H414) loads is 40.0gr to 42.0gr. There is no actual loading for H414 listed.

Was that hodgdons reloading info. I have a speer # 13 here also but it shows H414- 39grs start-- 43grs max for 85 gr spitz bt at 3090 Hodgdon shows 42-45 with barnes xbtc bullet Best Dave 0 -
Could be a LARGE difference between the SPEER and SIERRA bullets, even though they are the same weight.
Try the SIERRA manual info.0 -

I am working off the latest edition of the sierra book....85gr HPBT, 40.0 - 42.0 of W760 (H414).
I generally check several sources before I begin work up on a load, just to avoid situations like this.0 -
I was loading from the Hodgdon manual as well as M.L.McPherson's "metallic cartridge reloading" 3rd edition which listed both H414 and W760 at 41.5 to 45.0 and 42.0 to 44.0 respectivly for "85gr" bullet. obviously it was tooooo much given my results. I'll try again and start with 39gr of H414 and go from there. THANKS for your input. 0 -
I always use the bullet manufacturer's loading information if their is conflicting data in manuals. I figure that their information is more "bullet specific" than a generic "85-90gr bullet" load.
