Reloading For Ishapore 2A1 in 7.62 Nato
I have acquired an Enfield Ishapore in 7.62 Nato. I keep getting conflicting stories as to whether .308 is safe to shoot in it or not. It shoots Military ammo just fine. Would reloading be safe in this rifle if I started at the bottom of the load chart and worked up. I am not after the most powerful load just something to shoot a 150 to 165 grain deer type bullet at a reasonable velocity comparable to a regular .308 load. Thanks in advance.

My favorite for these kinds of rifles is 42gr of IMR 4895 witjh a 150 gr bullet. I have shot these in my Ishapore. 0 -
I, too, have read conflicting reports about 7.62x51 vs .308. Some say .308 is hotter and shouldn't be used in NATO chambered rifles. I do not find that to be so in the several .308 rifles that I have. 147 gr. FMJ NATO ammo clocks around 2800 fps over my chronograph screens while some brands of 150 gr. .308 factory stuff runs 2700 fps and some other brands are considerably less.
The load that my Ishapore likes best is 42 gr. of IMR4895 (as Pearyw says) only with a 165 gr. Remington pointed CoreLokt bullet. It clocks 2406 fps and 5-shot groups average 1.73". I think that's great for military sights and old, bi-focaled eyes. My rifle does not shoot 150 gr. bullets nearly as well.
I used to see a lot of those old military rifles in the deer woods back in the 50's and 60's; not so much anymore. Good luck with yours.0
