Don't load into the lands, it could cause excessive pressure!

I use a .010 jamb into the lands with my loads quite often. I do not have any issues with pressure.

I want to try seating into the lands and I think this barrel needs a little more velocity...do you think the seating depth will be enough to get me the extra velocity or would you add .5 grains of powder as well.?.?

I usually back off a couple grains when loading into the lands and then work back up. I notice a pressure spike (jump in velocity) when comparing same powder load, bullets in lands and bullets off lands. That's when I work back up to where I want to be.

If you're talking about VLD's and long for caliber bullets anyways. You may find that it might not just be more velocity, setting the bullets into the lands may solve your accuracy problem as well.

That was my thinking as well. I've never seated into the lands before. This is a light to medium load for the .300 Mag. I should be safe just seating them into the lands (without reducing my loads). I'll give that a shot before increasing my loads. Thanks.

As a general rule, with some notable exceptions, I usually find I'm at max about 1-1.5 gr. under published max. And getting better velocity than published for barrel length with slower powders. So, it says to me, that one, the powder has a different burn curve due to the instant pressure spike and two because of that different curve, effectiveness seems to increase with slower powders for case size.

All I really have for the .300 is H1000, Accurate 4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4831, and RL-22. Are you saying I should look at a different powder for seating into the lands (other than the RL22)???

I used H1000 for shooting 208 A-max and 210 Bergers. Loads varied from 68.5 in the summer to 71.5 in the winter. Those loads are about what my book gave as 72.5(ish) as max. You might go to IMR 7828 for shooting slightly lighter bullets like 190's-200's. You don't want to go with 4350 unless you are using 150's. 4831, VV N165, RE-17/19 for 165's up to 185's.
