I was warned
Some time back I talked about getting a chronograph, and eventually got a Chrony Beta Master. Someone on here (I think it was here) mentioned that "it isn't a question of if you will shoot your chrony, but when you will shoot it" Well the answer is "yesterday".
I was out back getting data on some more of my reloads, and I was shooting my Kel-Tec P11, when the unthinkable happened. I had some fairly hot 90 gr. 9mm's going downrange, when I managed to nick one of the upright wires that holds the plastic sun shields in place. The bullet ricocheted off the the wire, hit the center panel severing the wires to the front sensor. Then it continued through the front sensor, and peeled back the front of the case and bent it clear around to the side. In other words I pretty much destroyed it. I even managed to break the tripod socket from the bottom of the case. I think the only things that are salvageable are the rear sensor itself (not the case though), the wires and sun shields (I can bend the one wire back), the battery, the long phone line for the remote, and the phone jack.
I just stood there looking at it with a real sick feeling in my gut. I'm not sure how I managed to do it, whether it was a momentary distraction, or a loose grip on the gun, or just inattention. But I still get a queasy feeling every time I look at it.[:0][:(][:(][:(][:(][:I]
Does anyone know if Chrony offers a rebuilding service for numb nuts like me?
PS. The brass catcher that I made worked pretty good. It caught about 95% of the brass after I adjusted it.

Sorry about your misfortune. That's what I like about my Oehler and my PACT; the box is on the bench. I may shoot up the screens or the sun shields (and have!) but the box remains intact. 0 -
The Shooting Chrony people do a thriving business in replacing "oopsie" units. Call them. 0 -
Sh&&^T happens. At least you are honest enough to admit it. 0 -
Like your honesty!!!!! 0 -
If you replace the metal rods with wooden dowels, this won't happen again.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] Eddiequote:Originally posted by Bubba Jr.

Sure they give you a good deal on a new one, minus bullet holes. 0 -
I read that story and got a good chuckle as it brought to mind a friend doing the same thing. I am just glad you werent hurt in anyway!
Don't feel so bad though, I once threw a Wii Remote through my Brand New 48" LCD TV. Hadn't even paid it off yet and it was destroyed.
I just stared at the thing for minutes with my mouth dropped open in disbelief. Wife said the one thing that hurt the most - "You should have worn the wrist strap, stupid!" (The crazy thing still sits in my bedroom because I just can't throw it away yet)

Take a number...[:D] You ain't the first and you ain't the last.[;)]
I got my first one too. With, if I remember right a 9.3x62. There wasn't any salvaging it. I got another one and have been much more careful since.0 -
Contact Chrony. They sell parts. ASK ME how I know [;)][}:)] 0 -
It's also a good idea to hold off patterning the shotgun until you're done with the chrony....... 0 -
I am getting a kick out of this discussion. Sorry Bubba!
Its just good to know that I am not the only one who makes mistakes like these.
Best to you all!

Bubba, Thanks for bringing up the memories! I shot my dads Chrony about 15 years ago TWICE! Luckily the first one just grazed the top of the unit. It bent the case up and made it read funny once in awhile. I felt really bad but my dad said "Son, that stuff just happens, aim a little higher and try again." So, I was firing a string and was really nervous and on the 4th shot I blew out a rod. Never did find that section of the rod. He sent if back to chrony for an overhaul and finally about 3 years ago it quit working. So I stole it and sent it back to Chrony for their upgrade program and got him a better newer model. To this day I am still a little nervous shooting through a Chrony. 0 -
A friend destroyed mine, glad it was not a hostage situation.[:D] 0 -
I just joined Photo bucket, and here's a picture of what I did.

I had been real careful with mine and it made it through about 500rds no problem. Then my dad said he needed to borrow it and i said ok just don't shoot it. I think he hit on his third shot. Its a little ugly but still functional. 0 -
Here's another picture of the front of the unit.

It might surprise me, but I guess its totaled. Just take comfort that its a hundred and something and not a thousand and something.
Best to yah!

Thanks Brad. Chrony does offer trade-ins on this unit (even shot up ones) for about $85.00. I sent them an email asking them what the parts to repair it would cost and/or what they would charge to repair it. But I haven't heard from them yet. If it's like anything else, it will be cheaper to do the trade-in than trying to fix it. I know it will be an expensive lesson, but hopefully one that I will remember for a long time.[:I]
It seems like I have one of these "OH CRAP" moments at least once a year. At least this is the first time a firearm was involved. And the most important thing, is that no one was hurt or killed in the making of this event.[:)]0 -
Good news from Chrony today. They said that all I have to do is to order a new housing that comes with the sensors, wires and sunsheilds. The best part is that it is only $49.95. At least that won't be so painful.[:D][:D][:D] 0 -
That's the nice thing with the Beta-Master, the screen is back by you. I shot mine with a 9mm, and just had to replace the front sensor, and bang the metal back. 0 -
I ordered the replacement housing this morning. She said it will be shipped out early next week. $49.95 + $8.50 S&H. Hopefully that is the end of this saga.[:I][:o)]
UPDATE
I received the Chrony Beta today (11-20-09). It is a complete unit with the sensors, wires, screens, and even more instructions. I would like to publicly thank the Chrony people for making life easier for people with temporary rectal - cranial inversion, like myself. [:)][:)][:)]
Now I just have to screw up the courage to go out and send lead through the unit again. Wish me Luck.[:D]0 -
