dumb move #30000
bought new dies for a
new 308-started fresh.
tumbled my brass and
resized,primed.
The first case I resized
went thru the die too hard
so I spray more lube on it,
better now. So they're
all prepped for powder
and I meter out 41 gr of
varget, slip a 168 bthp
in the first case, it falls
right down to the powder,"what
the heck". tried another same thing,
got out some 165 grainers, same thing.
miked the bullet ,that seems to be ok.
examined my sizing die, seems there was
an empty 22 mag shell stuck on the
decapping pin well in side of the die.
for years I have kept that casing
in the tumbler watching it get brighter
and waiitng for some visible
wear and tear on it from the media.
30 years and it never got stuck in a case.
it opened up the throat of those 308's
real good.what a dope!!!!

Ahhh, Grasshopper. ConfuseUs say, "Never put in tumbler what you do not wish to be inside brass case."
That IS a clever way to monitor your tumbling media, but next time try some other brass doodad. An old brass fishing spoon or a key, perhaps?0 -
Very interesting recently I acquired a large amount of once fired brass and mixed a lot of it when tumbling I will never do that again. Spent more time picking 9mm out of .45 brass then it took to tumble them. 0 -
a while back i learned not
deprime before tumbling
or mix 38/357 with 45/44
brass. Get's so darn stuck
the casings get scratched.
i use a smal grit i guess
cause after tumbling 223
brass i use a wooden q tip
handle to remove all the media.
I'll have to find a small brass
widget to replace the 22 mag
(but not too small[:D])0 -
Sh&^t Happens, what more can I say. Seems every time I clean my brass I get 45/9mm, 44/357 stuck together. My daugher used to "Help" me by picking up my spent cases only to find 22s in the mix. First time I ever heard of a 22 in a 308. 0 -
I would think after 30 years you would know the effect of the media on a single piece of brass, and wouldn't need to replace it. 0 -

As I suggested, just drop in an old brass key. It can't stick in any case. 0 -
The .22 case stuck in the die? ... and spread all the necks? HMMMMMM...That's different. But it sure makes you wonder what you may miss next time. I've done a bunch of stuff that the next step down doesn't work....a big WTH??!! Like sticking .243 cases in with .257 and sizing them all. We figured it out before bad things happened. 0
