Never heard this one before
I am shooting a 17 Ackley Hornet, the cases are loaded with small rifle primers...another guy shows up on the range and starts shooting a 22 Hornet. We start talking and we are discussing our ammo. When I tell him I am using small rifle primers he tells that is all wrong in the Hornet case...he uses small pistol...gives better groups etc etc. True?? I always thought rifle case rifle primer.

this is out of noslers fith edition reloading guide on the 22 hornet [-The standard primer for the 22 hornet is the small rifle primer Many owners of the 22 hornet have experimented with various types of small pistol primers with varying success. However, the small rifle primer will deliver on average better accuracy.] 0 -
Considering the pressures and powder capacity of the HOrnet case, small pistol primers are an option. In some cases, the accuracy will improve but not universally. 0 -
Small pistol primers are definately an option though, like with everything else, each gun is a law unto itself and they may or may not be the best option for you. In my Kimber 82 Hornet I've found that small pistol primers and Lil'Gun powder are an unbeatable combination. 0 -
One reason that small pistol primers work in Many rifles that are chambered in 22 Hornet is the small bolt size. Because some rifles are just upgraded 22 Rim fire actions. This small bolt size will result with a smaller space for the firing pin spring this lighter spring will not always have enough force to fire a small rifle primer with a hard cup that is needed for some of the other hot loaded cartridges that use small primers. . even the PRE 64 Winchester model 70 has a smaller spring in the bolt of their model 70. 0
