What are your favorite powders for rifles? I use IMR 4895 in my .308 and .223 loads and it works okay, but that's an area I haven't experimented with enough to be an expert on.

because they have to be shipped and pay the HAZ MAT fees. In my opinion you can buy cheaper at local dealer or gunshow UNLESS you want a large amount.

Because to make it worth the hazmat you have to order lots of it. Last time I did it I ordered 32 pounds. You do that, it's worth it. You do that you probably want to shoot it, not sell it.

A 1 pound jug with hazmat and shipping would cost $25 just to ship- the value of the powder itself! Not worth it.

Lots of people probably don't want to screw around with the HAZMAT so they just sell it local to someone they know. I know I wouldn't want to screw around with the HAZMAT stuff. And like jonk said, you have to order several pounds to make it worth the extra price. I've got some 8 pound jugs of IMR 4895 on the way that was the cheapest option.

8lbs is the only way to buy it

even with haz mat fee it is cheaper per pound than anything you can find locally

and when you buy a 1lb it is really only 14oz at least when buying hodgdon powder

It doesn't take long for the hazmat fee/shipping to be cheaper than sales tax either if you buy in bulk. For me, the cheapest sales tax I could probably find on powder is 5.5%, assuming they would have the powder, which last time I checked they didn't and didn't know when they would be getting more. That's $1.10 sales tax per $20 worth of powder. Most of the sales tax around here would be a good bit higher than 5.5% Then you are also not paying their hazmat fee to get the powder to a local location. The more stuff like this gets shipped around, the higher the price. I was happy to find some IMR 4895, much less at a decent price. I bought it from Powder Valley, first purchase from them. $130/8 pounds plus shipping is as good as I've seen for a while. I've broused around online and places that were selling it for $150+ were out of stock.
