H110 45 LC load
looking for a load using 255 gr LFN with keeping fps under 1000..I shoot this out of a 7" Ruger BH.
I've been using 16.0 gr Alliant 2400 but it is so dirty..anyone use Universal or IMR 800-X are they much cleaner?

I would try 19 gr H110 with a magnum primer. Are you using a magnum primer with the 2400? 0 -
H110 is a powder that should NOT be reduced much under full charges. That's why there are no "Start" loads listed in load manuals with this powder. Winchester (H110 is the same as H110) and Hodgdon both say never reduce recommended loads more than 3%.
Reduced charges of H110 have been known to result in hangfires, misfires or -much worse- extreme pressure events that wreck the gun. Any of these bad things can happen at any time, even in strings of shots that "seem" normal.
Please use Universal for the loads you seek. Eight grains will do just about exactly what you want: a 255 cast bullet at about 950 fps. Universal is also much cleaner than similar powders, such as Unique.0 -
Rocky, just for the record the H110 in the tile of the thread was a mistake...I had started to type about my 45LC rifle load and then forgot to delete the H110 from the title line. I use 22 gr H110 /300 gr XTP in my Win Legacy 24" for hunting that's 1500fps and the same load chronos 1100 in my Blk Hwk .
Thanks for the data on the Universal, it's got to be cleaner than the 16.0 grs of 2400 I'm using now for my plinkers (no mag primer)0 -

Keith used 18.5gr 2400 and a 250gr bullet for a heavy load in the SAA Colt. The Ruger is much stronger.
Hercules Alliant 2400 and Unique don't burn clean in light charges especially when using light bullets.
For light bullet loads, a contributor to the American Rifleman tested many powders in his Blackhawk and found 9gr Herco behind a 200 gr bullet to be most accurate as well as the cleanest burning.
A magnum or Winchester primer will give more complete ignition of powder.0 -

Winchester don't make H-110, they make WW-296- and that is the same as H-110....0
