Alliant Powder
I'm new to reloading.....I'm trying to get things ready to reload my 300 RUM. Buddy of mine strongly recommends this "Alliant Reloder 22" powder to use in my 300 Rum. Is it REALLY any better than good ole Hodgdon 4831SC?

It' a little slower burning than H4831SC. Check the reloading manuals. In a cartridge case as large as the .300RUM I would think that an even slower burning powder than the 2 you mentioned would be better. Like Reloader 25 or Hodgdon's H1000. Hodgdon's web site lists "Retumbo" powder as giving top velocities for your cartridge. Good luck & good shooting. 0 -
Well, let me ask this....should I really be concerned with "top velocities"? This is a hunting rifle and all I really want is accuracy. 0 -
You should be concerned with what you want, it is up to you! If top accuracy is most important to you, that is fine. To determine the best powder for top accuracy will require you to shoot at least four different types. Some guys want the fastest bullet on the planet even if accuracy suffers. I'll take a medium speed bullet hitting exactly where I want it to hit over another 150 FPS. Dead is dead.
The 300 RUM is a big case, no matter what MV you end up with; what ever beast gets hit through the lungs with it is going to die pretty fast. A 200 grain bullet driven to about 3,000 FPS has a lot of killing power, so does a 150 grain pill at almost 3,500 FPS. I would look at Retumbo, RE-22, H-4831 and possibly H-1000 to find the accuracy you desire.0 -
both powders you list are a bit fast for the 300RUM. I run H1000, Retumbo, RL25, etc. You really need slower powders to get the RUM working.
If your hunting is under 400yds or so, you really don't need the RUM. It shines with 200gr+ pills and some ground under it.0 -
winch: I guessed that, since you have a rifle chambered for one of the largest .30 cal. cartridges available, you were interested in velocity as well as accuracy. One does not necessarily preclude the other. I would think that if only accuracy was your goal, you would have chosen something like the .308. With a new rifle, unless I have a proven load, I usually start with what the books say is the starting load for the powder that gives top velocities, work my way up, looking for pressure signs. If I can't get acceptable accuracy with that powder/bullet combination, I'll change components and start over. Again--good luck. I think you'll find that reloading is fun. 0 -
I guess I should explain a little more in detail on why I chose my 300 RUM. I have a bull elk hunt coming up this year that has taken me 15 yrs. to draw the tag. I have no confidence in my .30-06 or 7mm past 400yds. I needed something to really have the "snort" to reach out there if need be on an 800lb. bull elk. This is a once in a "lifetime" tag. I am simply getting prepared for a long shot if need be. I appreciate all the help this forum has offered. I think I will try the Retumbo first, then maybe a couple of the others mentioned after to see what works best. Anyone else have any other advice on loads for 300 RUM? 0 -
Just my Opinion but the 300 RUM is not really efficient unless 200gr or larger pills are used at MAX charges. So unless you find a great load with 200gr Accubonds at MAX velocity you really haven't gained any on a 300 Weatherby or Winchester Mag. Except of course a sore shoulder and empty wallet.
Also I find it funny that the 30-06 and 7mm Mag are no good past 400 yds. Just FYI there once was some men named Carlos Hathcock and Jack O'Connor who'd seriously disagree with you.

a 200gr match king over 88gr H1000 is leaving my pacnor 30" tube at ~3200fps, that is some killin power right there. 0
