Just an update on my Ruger Ultralight 257 Roberts. I floated the barrel. Loaded up several combos of powders & bullets using your experience as a quideline. Found one (or more) that will work.

Understand that I am 64 yrs old, my eyes are not what they were, I was shooting from a portable shooting rest in a pasture, a breeze (at least here in West Texas it was a breeze) was blowing, etc. According to my rangefinder, the target was 102 yds. However, after floating the barrel it put 4 Hornady factory 117 BTSPs in about 1.25". My best handload group was with Hornady 120 gr hollow point & 35 gr of 4320 (four in less than an inch). Also had acceptable results with 4895 & 100 gr Hornady and 4350 & the 120.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

    nmaineron,

Good deal! 4320 should pretty much be a case filler with that bullet. As you noted the difference between a bullet that stabilizes and one that doesn't is a LOT of accuracy difference.

She is such a sweet rifle.I bet that it hasn't had much more than 100 rounds through it ever.I had it drilled for a scope...I know...damn near ruined it too...but it is never going anywhere outside the family anyway.I agonized over that decision but I feel that I would much rather have a very functional tool than a handsome one,now its handsome and functional.

I took a small buck with it a few years back..struck it in the throat..that deer did a back flip. That was before I was loading for it so I don't recall what I was using for ammo but I was some impressed at her performance.Ron

    nmaineron,

I feel the same about mine. It's a good looking rifle. Even though it has the Pachmayr scope and recoil pad added.(the latter will get changed.) I do need to get the scope fixed so it will work better for me. But the look of it is very nice and it shoots well. It's really nice to handle shooting offhand.

Don't forget that it could also very well shoot 75 gr. bullets. 60's if you really wanted to. It makes a nice walking varminter with 75 gr. bullets. Mine is certainly accurate enough to go after coyotes with 300-350 yd. shots.
