Load Increments

There is no hard and fast number that is safe in all loads. A charge weight change that would go unnoticed in a 300 Win Mag would take a Hornet apart.

So, rather than hard numbers, I have always recommended this method:

From the book Maximum load, deduct 10% to set a Start load (the exception being those few powders where small or no reduction is recommended). Now, calculate 2% of the maximum and use that as your charge increment. Your test series of loads would use 90, 92, 94, 96, and 98% of maximum.

You can round the increment up or down a bit if it comes to an amount that's difficult to measure. This system works with any cartridge and any book maximum charge.
