45-70 light load with "smoke" question
I am looking for a way to load my .45 70 in a low power load but- I want to have lots of smoke. Just a 'show" load for my kids.
Talcum powder or?
Thanks!

Black powder. will give smoke and is what the first factory cartridges were loaded with[^] 0 -
I appreciate your suggestion, but I'm looking for an additive to my smokeless powder load to make it look like a blackpowder load. 0 -
You're asking for a heap of trouble. Don't mess around with your
idea. BP or forget the whole idea.0 -
Ok- Thanks! 0 -
A good light load for the 45-70, definately with B/P,Goex 2F 55grs with a wad and a 405gr lead bullet.make sure you have no air space between the powder charge and the base of the bullet. You can use felt wads, lubed or not to fill the void. This is what was called the "carbine load" 55-405.B/P likes a little compression on the powder charge.Starline brass is real thick and has a reduced powder capacity as opposed to Winchester's roomier brass.Nice to shoot and plenty of smoke.[^] 0 -
Try using IMR TrailBoss, it's for cowboy action shooters, nice light loads, but not much smoke.

or hodgdons 777, works like black but not as corrosive. clean-up is easyer too. 0 -
Good ideas all.
Thanks!
I'll load up some by early next week for my Marlin.0 -
If you really want to go lower, and stick with black, you can use a filler such as corn meal or cream of wheat to take up the extra space, lightly compressed by the bullet. The main thing is no air in the case. 0
