I was just going to toss that out as well. Someone mentioned it on the experts forum a few days ago. I can't find the thread right now.

There is a new on on the auction side as well.

    Savageman,

Here is a Remington that will meet your requirements:

    First of all, you state:

"I want to buy a very accurate factory rifle that is competitive in F Class and benchrest competition out to 600-yards. I want it in .308 Win and I want it to be NIB or nearly so."

It depends on which class you choose to shoot. One class is only .308 and .223 while the other class is open as long as the you don't exceed 35 caliber.

'Factory' and 'competitive' never go hand-in-hand, except for now. That's because no one has put the effort and the dollars into solving the problems and the pricing.

Savage has their model that will be both factory and competitive AND at a reasonable price. That's really the only choice currently. While you may think that 26" will work, you're missing a little practical information. Shooting a .308 Win. to 600 yards is fine but stretching it out to 1,000 yards can result in the bullet dropping into the transonic range (loss of accuracy). Most of us that use the .308 Win. have longer barrels that usually start at 30" and again, the only factory player is Savage.

Another factor to consider for any game shot from the prone position is recoil. There is nothing wrong with the .308 Win. but after a day of continuous shooting in competition, you might be worn out. Many F-Class shooters are competing with the smaller cartridges such as the 6mmBR and all of its variants or something like the 6-6.5 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6XC or any one of a number of smaller capacity cases with a high degree of potential accuracy. These cartridges are also being used at the 1,000 yard line.

I shoot .308 Win. but with a 30" barrel at 1,000 yards. I prefer to use my own cartridge for F-Class F/O which is similar to the 6mm International. I also use a couple of different 6.5mm cartridges and I can recommend something along the lines of the 6.5x55 or the 6.5 Creedmoor, both available from the factory as loaded ammunition.

The Savage is an easy transition into a switch barrel system so you can buy the complete rifle and then buy another barrel which can be interchanged with the first barrel.

There is too much to cover here so look into some of the options and post again with some of your thoughts.

    Best.

A gun nut friend told me to buy a new CZ with a bull barrel. There is another point to concider though. Resident frequency will need to be adjusted by either crowning the muzzle or matching the bullet and powder load to achieve the tightest groups. Choosing the right gun is only half the battle. Please don't give up on the gun that you get until you have tried every brand of cartridge in your new toy.
The Browning boss rifle had solved the frequency problem by adding an adjustable muzzle break that could be tuned to several brands of cartridges. Please let us know how it turns out.
