I've been casting for years and have never needed to use a release agent. Wash new molds in hot soapy water, dry and use. If you have an old mold that doesn't look all that good inside, clean with a pencil eraer.

+1. Never needed a release agent in 10-15 different molds in 30 years.

+ 2 never needed in 35+ years I leave the mold full when I get ready to quit casting for the day this keeps the inside from rusting . NEVER oil the inside of a mold block.

I have had some sticky molds. However, lightly polishing them has always fixed the problem. If you need to do this:

Get the lead and mold up to temperature. Cast a few bullets. Leave one in the chamber but cut the sprue. Drill a small hole into this and screw a screw into it- no need to be exact and it will self-tap the hole in the lead. Now open the mold.

Dip the bullet in a paste of bathroom cleanser/water. Should be a thick paste. You can also use a very fine grinding compound for this.

Put back in mold. Chuck the screw into a drill. Run back and forth at slow speed, for maybe 45 sec. total.

Now scrub the mold down with hot soap and water and let dry.

When next you cast everything should drop out slick as snot.

I've had very poor luck with release sprays. They always applied poorly leaving a frosting of light pits on the bullet, or didn't work as advertised.

The NEI mold prep applied with a Q-tip works better than smoke or spray in my and my friends' moulds.
