223 reloading
Ok I know this will sound stupid but here I go. I am planning on reloading 223 for my AR and I was looking for dies. I have found 223 die set from lee and it is in 223 remington. I have a Lee turret press and I plan on getting the dulex rifle set. is this what I am looking for. It was so much easier when i started reloading 45acp I knew what I was looking for.

Dan, You don't want to use a neck sizing die for an AR. What you want is a three die set. Full Length sizing die, seating die and a crimp die. Many rifle sets don't have the crimp die but it is a good addition for shooting in a semi auto. You can buy a LEE factory crimp die seperatley. The dies you are looking at will work but you will want to get a crimp die.

One way to go about this is to buy a 'small base' sizing die(set) that takes the case dimensions down just a little more than a standard FL die. This is so you can resize with confidence you aren't going to jam a round in your chamber. It can be adjusted out to create just a tad of interference still with the headspace and help preserve accuracy.
Otherwise the Lee factory crimp is a good way to go.

Bhavin is correct in that it's a precaution but not necessary. I should've added that I haven't ever had a stuck round due to re-sizing in my 5.56 chambered AR either using standard dies. Again, just a precaution that some people take. I've fired well over 1k rounds through my AR.0 -

Looks good. I would suggest looking at Midway USA, Graf & Son and Natchez shooter supply before you order as the price on the rifle die set seems high to me. You might find them cheaper.
RE: Small base dies. I have loaded 10's of thousands of rounds for AR's and M4/M16's and have never needed a small base die. And I mostly shoot 1 fired military cases. 308 and milsurp 1 fire brass is another story.0 -

If I'm not too late jumping in here, I have used the Lee Deluxe 3 Die Set in .223 Remington for quite a while now and have had great success with reloads for my AR. The die set that I recommend contains the Full Length Resizing Rie, the Bullet Seating Die and the Factory Crimp Die. You can find this die set for around $20 if you take a little time and shop around. Ebay may be another source. Good Luck. OH!, there are no stupid questions when it comes to reloading. 0 -
I all depends on the rifle as to the need of small-base or standard sizing die. My A3 carbine will stick rounds in the chamber if I don't use a small base die. My LR.308 also sticks rounds in the chamber if I don't use a small base die. One way to check is to find a friend or someone that has a .223 small base die and have him size a round for you. Then size one in a standard full length die. See which piece of brass chambers better. If the standard sized case chambers allright, then you are good to go with a standard die. If it is tight, go with the small-base die. It worked for me. Good luck! 0 -
The die set in your first post is all you need for a AR. Most AR chambers are big enough that you don't need a small base sizing die.
I've loaded thousands of 223 for my AR'S and never used a factory crimp die.0
