45-70 question
been out of loading for about 20 years, going to restart soon with 45-70. my old load was 57gr of imr3031 with 300gr sie hp. i am now looking at imr4198. my sec. edition sierra manual shows 51.8gr as max. load, however hodgdon,s shows 54gr as a starting load. what's up? loads will be shot in modern 1895 marlin, cva optima, h&r 1871.

Sounds like one source is for IMR4198 and the other is for H4198. Absolutly different powders. 0 -
It's not that unusual to find that kind of differences from one manual to another. In fact, I rather like to see it because it indicates that the different companies have done their own testing instead of just copying another company's data.
Incidently, I have never had a great deal of luck in the 45-70 with either IMR3031 or IMR 4198.0
