250 Savage and H414

I have some H414 and wanted to try it in my 250 Savage. Went to the Richard Lee Modern Reloading book (2nd Edition; 2004)and found a starting load of H414 for a 100 grain jacketed bullet to be 38 grains with a max load of 40 grains. Then checked the Hodgdon book and website and it lists a starting load for a 100 grain (Hdy SP) as 34 grains with a max of 37.2 (Hodgdon website confirms same). Seems pretty odd that one source would have a starting load hotter than the manufacturer's recommend maximum load. Clearly the wise thing to do is stay with Hodgdon's suggested and max loads. Just wondered if any of you had experience with H414 with the 250 Savage? Any one pushing it beyond the 37.2 max recommended by Hodgdon?

  It is not unusual to find starting and max loads that vary quite a bit from manual to manual. Most use a universal receiver or at least different test mediums. The pressures will vary. Some use cup and some psi. That is why it is adviseable to start below the max and work up. What is safe in your rifle might not be in mine.Hoggdons 26th edition shows 40 grs as max with a 100gr bullet. I find that Hodgdon to be a bit conservative compared to IMR or Lyman. but start low and be safe.
