I've been shooting tite group for years and my brass always has been full of powder residue, been told it's because I'm using too light of a load, (6 grains). I think the book says at least 7.2 or something. They shoot more accurate with 6 grains as opposed to a heavier load for Cowboy shooting for me. I use a 250 grain bullet.

Light charges of powder do not expand the brass enough to oburate the chamber completely. When the powder gasses come out of the case they leave the black smoke residue you see.

If you are going to load light for cowboy action shooting try Trail Boss, I've had real good results.
    For what it's worth.

I shoot 6.2g of Titegroup with Laser Cast 250g lswc bullets and it works just great. This is the max load for Hodgdon, they state 5.0g - 6.2g in their manual.
