Powder for 38 super
I have finally become successful in converting a RCBS Green Machine to 38 Super, my question is-- What is a good powder that meters accurately in a little dandy rotor measure and gives good balistics? I have normally used Unique but wasn't very happy with the consistency of the powder weights through the little dandy and hoped maybe someone knew of a better powder for what I'm doing. Thanks.

Vhitavouri powders are popular for 38 super and meter well. But they are exspensive and can be hard to find. I use Hodgdon HS6 for 9x23 (very similar to 38 Super) and it meters great. Winchester WSF may work well also. Check out the Hodgdon website they will have load data for Hodgdon, Winchester and IMR powders. 0 -
I agree HS-6 and I like HS-7 too. 0 -
HS-7 or if you can find it SP-2 0 -
Did the same thing to my 9mm Green Machine many years ago, It wasen't hard to do.
I have found that WW 231 works real good in a Colt Bar-Sto barreled
38 Super. If you load them hot use good P+ brass.0 -
I like HS6 as well.
Trail boss also meters better than it has any right to given its shape.0 -
Hot loads in 38 super are best loaded with HS-7...not 231. 0 -
Hello The green machine is a very good unit except for the powder measure for small charges of pistol powder in small diameter cases. IMHO. This would lead me to load with Ball Powder only VHITAVOURI is great powder for this case. 0 -
I see I am alone here, but I have enjoied good results with Accurate Arms #5 powder. Now it is my goto powder for most of my semi-auto pistol rounds; 45ACP, 40 S&W, 9mm, too. 0 -
I've loaded 5grs of Bullseye under a 125gr XTP for years. I'm shure there are other good powders, but this is what I've used for years.
For what it's worth.

I use Blue dot Exclusively for my .38 super. Have been for over 20 years. 0 -
Mark,
You jogged my memory, I loaded some blue dot under 146gr Win hollow points and was very happy with them, real clean.
