Safe M1 Garand load with IMR4350?

    DENWA,

It is the opinion of most reputable M1 Garand reloaders that any powder slower than 4320 will cause damage to the Op Rod and possibly to the action due to high port pressures. Please read this thread from a couple of years ago:

My suggestion is to go buy some more powder.

    Best.

Brownells also sells a gas plug with adjustable venturi to allow just enough pressure to operate the action. This would allow you to use slower powders if you really want to.

I would SUSPECT that a safe load could be developed as is, but without a way to measure port pressure I'd not want to offer unsubstantiated guesses. Even if you did have a load that produced safe port pressure, it would be a light load for that powder and probably not as ballistically efficent or accurate as the 4895 load.

    Thanks guys,

    great post and good info.

I just really wanted to keep the same powder for both bolt and gas guns.

    crap!

Try some IMR485, both may like it real well. Good luck!

I shoot 45 grains of IMR 4064, no worries at all.

    WW2buf,

do you use this powder in both M1 and bolt guns?

I guess I'm gonna have to use the 4064 too. I just hate to have to segregate 30-06 for bolts and gas.

    I've got IMR4064 for the 308.

Time to start looking for the best dual purpose load that is super accurate in bolt gun(priority) and functions the M1 accurately too.

    thanks

Not to go into a long winded discussion but I would dicourage the use of 4350 powder(either IMR or H) because of the slower burning aspects. I have always used IMR4895 for my Garands. It is ideal for the Garand. Contact me if you need a starting load. James

DENWA, sorry for the late reply. I'll use this load in bolt rifles as well. I have used WIN748 in the bolt rifles as well, but find that the Winchester powders have a tendency to be a lot more sooty than the IMR powders.

Hope this helps, and happy shooting.
