You are correct, Sir. You should trim the case to .010 shorter than the max length. Then debur inside and outside.

Anything that exceeds the Max trim length is "too long". (trim it)

Anything longer than max can be a bad thing as this can affect pressure curves. Depending on the case being reloaded it can also effect accuracy.

I have loaded 45 cases "willy nilly" and while the shot O.K. they shot better after I spent some time trimming and sorting by case head stamp. I know a lot of "Writers" suggest using cases from the same lot number but in reality this is a lot harder for the average shooter to do than you'd think1

If you do any revolver rounds, such as 357 or 44 magnum you'll find accuracy and power in cases all trimed to the same length and sorted by case head stamping.

In this case it provides a much more "repeatable" crimp on the bullet. This equates to consistant bullet pull upon firing which means a more uniform burn which means a smaller deviation in velocity which allows better groups.

    Hope this helps.[8D]

trimming cases is a pain but the end results are good. been working on 25lbs of 223, i see brass in my sleep, (what sleep) its 3.30am.
if all the cases are the same length it makes them all uniformed when seating and crimping.

things got alot better when i picked up this elect rcbs trim pro with a 3 way cutter

    Chevlle427:

Dillion used to make a motorized brass trimmer for 223 and 308 cases. Had a Bud mount one in his old lyman c press and had at it. Production was fair and it was a whole lot easier on his hands.
