The power used in operation of the bolt on a gas system changes the recoil impulse. It makes it seem that a autoloader kicks less; which in fact it does, but the total energy is the same. Some of the recoil energy is exchanged for mecanical power to eject the empty and feed the next round. The reduction is quite noticable on guns of equal weight.

The reduction in recoil has led to the myth of reduced MV. The drop in muzzle velocity on a round like the 30-06 would be hard to find without some statical analysis being done firing hundreds of rounds to find the trend. four to ten FPS in shot variance is hard to track accurately.
