17 Ackley Hornet

Not many published loads for this new "mouse" gun. Anyone have some favorites they would share with me?

    Good morning all, Anyone have any starting loads for 17 A. hornet? I using Kindler's manual now. He suggests Vit. 120(I can't find it for less than $60.00 per lb. shipped),AA1680 (I have it,but it burns lihe waste engine oiland groups SUCK too).Haven't tried 4227 yet.I am hoping for info on Ramshot enforcer ,AA 5744 , AA#7 ,AA#9 , or something along these lines. Any help will appreciated. Respectfully, 637e . Thanks in advance

    P.O. himself gave 1oads of 11 to 12 grains of 4198 for 3,300 to 3,585 fps and 11 to 11.5 grains of 4227 for 3,390 to 3,570, both with 25 grain pills. Only a guess here, but if it were mine I think I'd try Lil'Gun. In the full Hornet its the best.

    This is one of the best "micro" cartridges around for my money. Its performance far surpasses its size. Todd Kindler and Dick Saunders have reloading books on this cartridge. I dug back in my notes and found this article regarding load development of the .17 AI Hornet. It's a full description of case forming and load development so read the whole article:

    "Various powders mentioned for the .17 Ackley Hornet include 2400, 4198, 4227, AA 1680, Reloder 7, and a few others that none of us would be able to find today. James Calhoon said in his data that AA 1680 was the best powder in this cartridge, Walt Berger thinks it's a good one, and Todd Kindler also likes it, though these latter two also offer data for other powders. James said he thought that 25-grain bullets were too heavy for best performance in this small case, so data for only his 19- and 22-grain bullets was provided. Walt and Todd offered data for 25-grain weights and less. IMR 4227 appeared to be the second most popular powder for this case, and offered performance similar to AA 1680."
