30-06 for wife.
My wife bought us 2 hunts to Texas to hunt hogs and Aoudad. I am planning to let her use a custom '06 for this and am trying to find a few loads light on recoil for her using the 130grn SSP or 155 A-Max bullet for I have a few boxes of each, any recommendations?

I just got back from Texas on the same hunt on 02/22/06 with exact same situtation with the wife and in need of a light load for a 7mm.
In January 06 issue of guns & ammo there is an artical on light loads for young hunters, females, and, new shooters. they suggest for a 30-06:
130 gr speer * 30 gr of win 748 * 2060 fps (very mild load)
125 gr nosler * 30 gr of vvn133 * 2050 fps (very mild load)
" " * 35 gr of vvn133 * 2350 fps (medium load)

Speer #13 Manual lists their 130gr Flat SP in a Rem. 700 rifle w/22" bbl, w-w case and standard cci large rifle primer as a reduced load with XMP 5744 powder starting at 25.0 gr (1814 fps) and maximum at 27.0 gr (1941 fps).-- Another load with this 130gr bullet and H4895 powder = start 45.0 gr (2624 fps) and maximum is 49.0 gr H4895 (2730 fps). -- With the Speer 150 gr bullets H4895 starts at 42.0 gr for 2427 fps and virtually duplicates a 30-30 winchester load with the same weight bullet. Maximum is 48.0 gr H4895(2527 fps). -- For the Hornady 155 gr A-Max in 30.06 I some times load this for a Garand rifle ( from the Hornady Sixth Edition Manual ): Win. LR primer and your choice of case, 155 A-Max bullet, H4895 powder = Start at 43.2 gr ( 2400 fps ) and max.(for a Garand) is 46.4 gr H4895 (2600 fps). Anywhere in this load range shoots pretty flat for a couple hundred yards before starting to hold over much. -- You can also go to Hodgdon Powders website (www.hodgdon.com) and they used to have a section on reduced loads if none of the replies here fit your fancy. I think they still have them listed there. -- P.S. = For what it's worth I don't think I'd use the A-Max bullet on hogs. Sometimes they are tougher than deer ribs and paper targets. I know you've probably already decided on light loads for a 30-06 but had you, if you have one, thought about using a .250SAV/.257/25-06, 6.5mm/260 Rem class rifle? Even a 7mmBr would be a good selection.
That being said I would load 1-2 grs below the very minimum with 130 gr. bullets in the Manual. Or, find the reduced loads using SR4759. Do not go very far below minimums listed as the phenomenon known as reverse ignition can occur. It's not common but can happen. Generally when I have loaded down for a round I've found that the minimum loads work fine and reducing a couple grains is about all you want to take it down anyhow. Way too much loss of velocity. -Good luck0 -
Souns like you are already set on the -06, but a .308 will do the same job and be a lot more comfortable for her to shoot. The .308 is very comparable to the -06 ballistically...especially if you are going to use light loads in the -06. 0 -
Hey ECC, I would like to use a .308 for that is what I use at work and know all too well the benefits of it. The only problem is that I don't have access to one outside of there. I already have the '06 and it is really a tack driver with full house loads for it sports a custom pencil weight barrel from SHAW on a Mauser 98 action and it drives nails!!!!!! So what I have to do is find something softer for her for she is somewhat recoil sensitive. She shoots a 20ga 11-87 Premier slug gun for deer hunting already and I am afraid of giving her too much gun and she get an "idiot ring" when not necessary. 0 -

I thought as well it would draw some fire over and I was waiting!!! I am glad everyone held fire long enough to get some seriousness in first. But the comments are well taken and looked forward to. I don't think I could trade her for a gun I believe, anyone have a HK-91 laying around interested in a trade?!?!?!?! LOLOL!!! 0 -
