7mm-08
Just ordered a dies set and some 140 gr nosler ballistic tips to reload for my remington 700 varmint special. anyone got any loads they particularly like. these are for paper punching, not hunting.
I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Just got a BLR in 7mm-08 and I hate to buy factory bullets. Can anyone suggest a load for whitetails? Most of my shooting will be in the 50 yd range (I hunt in a swamp) and I want ot use the heaviest bullet I can for this round.
Watt yoo got?[8D]0 -
The heaviest bullet you can use may be more dependant on the rate of twist of your barrel than the cartridge. 0 -
The rate of twist in the rifling does control how heavier a bullet your rifle will stabilize for accuracy. If you are only going to be shooting at 50 yds or so it doesnt matter as it will be plenty accurate at that short range, long range grouping of shots is what would deteriorate due to inadequare twist.
Id say try any of the 170 - 180 gr or thereabouts in weight and preferably a round nose soft point to do what you want.0 -
7mm-08 Remington : Winchester LR primer, Remington or Winchester case, 175gr Nosler Partition bullet and between 36 and 37.5 grains(37.5 is Maximum load in Nosler manual) of Hodgdon Varget powder. Mine shoots good at 37.0 grains. -- Or same 175 Nosler bullet, Remington or Winchester case, Win. LR primer and between 41.5 and 43.0 grains(43.0 is maximum load in Nosler manual) of IMR4350 powder. Mine shoots good at 42.8 grains. Your gun may like a different charge. Start low and go up 0.2 tenths of a grain at a time on your powder charge until you find a sweet spot your gun likes for accuracy. -- The standard bbl twist for 7mm-08 is 1-9" and will generally stabilize anything between 110gr and 175gr bullets in my experience. Sometimes you find a bbl that just doesn't like a certain weight. If your doesn't like the 175, drop down to the 160gr Nosler if you really want the heavy bullet bullets.............good luck......[8D] 0 -
Hi guys, new to the forum, but not new to the 7mm08. I abandoned all of the my heavier long action rifles 7 years ago and searched for the baddest light weight, short action deer round going and to me there is no comparison to the 7mm08. I know that you are focused on heavy bullets for this gun, but at 50 yards any of the polymer tipped bullets will absolutely punish any whitetail walking the planet, all with a 140 grain bullet. Hornady SSTs will launch this short action powerhouse at a screaming 3000 fps, compare that to any 270 load shooting a 130 grainer. And you know a 130 grain 270 will smoke'em at 50 yards or less. I've used the fedral premiums, Winchester silver tips and the hornadys. Heavier bullets won't kill'em any deader than the 139/140gr from any of these 3. Can you tell I just love this caliber. Got a Tikka T3 lite this year, 1/2 groups out of the box with the hornady SST. 0 -
Steven,
I guess I missed your previous posts so a belated Welcome to the Forums!
According to my list, the Browning BLR has a twist rate of 1:9-1/2" which means that you should be able to use bullets that are about 1.250" long. The 175 gr. round nose bullets fill that bill.
Swamp deer. Fifty yards. There are occasions that I back away from the sizzling velocities and the plastic tipped arrow shaped bullets in favor of the lower velocity and round nose bullets. This is one of those. I hunt for meat, not horns, so my reasoning is that with this solution you can generally eat right up to the bullet hole which is not necessarily true of the higher velocities and lightly constructed bullets.
I suggest that you look into the combination of V V N-150 and the 175 gr. Hawk RT bullets.
Best.
Strick,
Welcome to the Forums! I have no intentions of being contentious at all. I'm just looking at the other aspects.

Thanks for the info fella's. To tell ya how knew I am to the 7mm class of bullets, I didn't realize that you could go as heavy as 175 gr in that cal. Most of my loading has been with my 44 and 06.
Nosense is right on the money. I'm not looking for "speed", just something that will shoot 1" groups out to 100 yds (like I ever shoot that far hunting).
Will probably work with the 4350 since I already have that. Don't think much of all the "wizz bang" plastic tip bullets, will work with the Nosler and Sierra round and spitzers.
Once again, thanks for the info and I will post pics of the first swamp monster I get with it.[:p]
